Virtual OTA validation with simulated targets and scenario-based testing
Virtual OTA Testing with LCOS
OTA problems can appear under conditions that are difficult to reproduce with real hardware — such as a network connection dropping during a download, a delayed server response, or an ECU returning an unexpected code.
LG tests these scenarios using LCOS (LG Common OTA Validation Platform), which executes test scenarios against simulated targets rather than real hardware.
LG Common OTA Validation Platform
LCOS is built around a fixed core and product-specific plug-ins, allowing the common validation functions to be reused across different product environments.
The LCOS core handles:
Scenario Engine
Execution Control
Input Validation
Common Actions
Logging & Reporting
Product-specific plug-ins add the communication protocols required for each target environment.
Product-Specific Protocol Support
Vehicle
DoIP
CAN
Robot
TCP
Modbus TCP
IoT
MQTT
HTTP REST
Home Appliance
Raw TCP
A separate test server simulates the actual protocol traffic. This allows the LCOS core to remain unchanged while the appropriate plug-in is added for each product family.
Reference plug-ins are also provided as a starting point for adaptation and expansion.
Key Capabilities
OTA testing against simulated targets
Scenario-based validation
Reusable LCOS core architecture
Product-specific protocol plug-ins
Separate protocol simulation server
YAML and JSON test scenarios
AI-assisted scenario generation
AI-assisted execution-log analysis
Logging and reporting
Support demonstrated in RTOS-based IoT and automotive environments
Scenario-Based Validation
Test scenarios are written in YAML or JSON.
They can be created directly by an engineer or produced through an AI module connected to LCOS.
The AI module can also analyze execution logs and report what failed and why, supporting analysis after a test has been executed.
Reusable Validation Architecture
The LCOS architecture is designed so that the common validation core is reused while product-specific protocols are handled through plug-ins.
This enables the same core architecture to support different target environments without rebuilding the validation platform for every product family.
LCOS has been utilized with RTOS-based IoT devices and automotive environments.
