What is TSN?

TSN

In the past, serial communication methods were sufficient for most networking needs. However, recent advancements have necessitated the use of Ethernet-based parallel communication across multiple channels. In such scenarios, issues such as prioritization, data loss, and time delays have become significant challenges. Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) has emerged as a solution to address these issues by providing deterministic and reliable communication.

TSN ensures that critical data is transmitted with minimal data loss, latency, and with high priority, thereby improving overall network performance. TSN makes it possible to synchronize clocks across devices, reserve bandwidth for important data, and prioritize its transmission over less critical information. This makes TSN essential for applications requiring precise timing and synchronization, such as industrial automation, autonomous driving and real-time audio/video streaming.

IEEE develops global standards in a broad range of industries, including information technology and telecommunication, automotive, transportation, home automation, nanotechnology, robotics, emerging technologies, and many more. These standards ensure interoperability, reliability, and high performance across various technologies and applications from industrial automation to enterprise networking.

Among IEEE standards, IEEE 802 is the standard for LAN/MAN, and the sub-standard IEEE 802.1 covers:

  • 802 LAN/MAN architecture

  • Internetworking among 802 LANs, MANs and other wide area networks

  • 802 Security

  • 802 overall network management, and protocol layers above the MAC & LLC layers

The IEEE 802.1 Working Groups focus on developing standards for higher layer protocols and management features in LAN, MAN. This includes bridging, management, and network security. The group is responsible for defining the architecture for 802 networks, ensuring seamless integration and interoperability between different network types and technologies. The IEEE 802.1 Working Group includes the following groups:

  • Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) Task Group — The TSN Task Group has evolved from the Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Task Group in early 2010s

  • YANGsters — Common practice for YANG models supporting IEEE 802 protocols

  • Security TG

  • Maintenance T
